Ajira Airways

I'll start by saying that this is long but worth reading all of the way through... your mind may be blown.

Last week we saw our first glimpse of Ajira Airways during an episode of Lost. The fist notable thing about the "airline is it's name. Ajira is the Hindi word for "island". The first time we say anything about Ajira was prior to this season starting. During the full length Lost Season 5 promo featuring The Fray song "You Found Me" which was featured on both ABC.com and iTunes there were 2 flash frames of the Ajira Airways logo. Shortly there after ajiraairways.com was launched. There have been numerous Lost-affiliated websites over the years (find815.com, thehansofoundation.com) and all of them had hidden easter eggs, but most of them were not incredibly difficult to decipher. The crucial information on ajiraairways.com is a little tougher to figure out.

There are very obvious easter eggs, for example all of the photos and profiles were done by "Antonio B. MacCutcheon". Anderson MacCutcheon was the name of the Royal Navy soldier who was the namesake of MacCutcheon Scotch drank by Charles Widmore. The name "E.M. MacCutcheon" also appears on a Sky Club card for Ajira Airways on the website.

As with previous Lost-affiliated websites there are some hints hidden in the source coding for the site. For the record, my humble web design abilities allow me to manage this site and that's about it. Thanks to sethislost.com reader Josh for pointing these out to me. The following can be found in the coding:

  • Pineapples in Hawaii.
  • Supersonic is commercial thirty till meridian.
  • "Where America's day begins."  (The official motto of Guam... more on this in a bit)
  • "So off they started about Irish sport and shoneen games the like of lawn tennis and about hurley and putting the stone and racy of the soil and building up a nation once again and all of that."  This is a quote from James Joyce's novel 'Ulysses'.
  • "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
This is the very famous John 3:16 passage from the bible.
  • The last one is most interesting to me for a number of reasons. In one of the promotional video's for Ajira Airways (see below this paragraph) that has been released there is a flash frame of a man holding a sign that says "जॉत 3:16" which translates to John 3:16... I'll get back to John 3:16 in a bit.

When you go on to the actual website there are a number of pages that seemingly have no meaning, but nn the Ajira Adventures page, under the Island Adventures, there is the option to download instructions for making an origami 3D ball as a way to help kids pass time on the plane. It reads, "Travel Tip: Teach your kids some origami to make the time fly by. Be sure to use your boarding pass... you never know what you might find hiding right inside". On the same page there is a sample boarding pass that can be printed out. When you follow the origami instructions and look inside the ball you see the airport code GUM (Guam). Directly above "GUM" is the word "Time". The boarding pass also has other numbers on it. The bar code is 144 47 50E and13 29 02N appears on the "Airline use" line. These numbers are actually the coordinates for the the Guam Airport.

Booking an actual flight is the key to unlocking the best hidden data. Los Angeles is an obvious city of departure and given the clues Guam is an obvious destination. One-way ticket also seems obvious because if this flight is ending up on the island there probably isn't any going back. For the date select 1/21/2009 which was the date of the season premier. There are a number of different flights you can choose but one of them is flight 316. Given the John 3:16 reference it makes sense as the right choice. If you look at the "flight numbers" they all have digits that add up to 10, which is the number of adult passengers. I also have a feeling that we may see a total of 10 people going back the island but that is just a guess at this point. All in all, this is what you need to enter into the flight information:

    Flight type: One Way
    From: Los Angeles, CA
    To: Guam
    Departing: 1/21/2009
    Select Flight: 316 11:30am
    Adults: 10
    Children: 0
    Promotional Code: 112114111109111

When you do so the first thing you see is this video:

I am not sure what to make of the line about there being plenty of seats for stand by passengers and that they will read "the list" shortly. We know that Jacob likes lists. It is quite possible that this is how our people get back to the island and that they are the standby passengers. But that is purely speculation on my part. But it is intriguing to think that the people who were shooting at Locke, Sawyer, Juliet and the rest were in some way with the Oceanic 6... but again, that is pure speculation.

Once the video is finished you are brought to a page to select your seat. Most of the seats are unavailable. But when you click on the rows 3, 4, 10, 24, 34, 35 there are a variety of images that flash. I'll get back to those. If you click on the seats in row 15 your seat is confirmed and you can print out your boarding pass. Interestingly, if you look at the watermark in the corners of the pass and in the middle, they are the hieroglyphics that appeared in The Swan station counter then the button was not pushed.

Back to the images... they flash quickly but here is what they are:

    Photobucket

I am guessing that the N824 is some type of aircraft number. Frank Lapidus actually had N842 on his helicopter... maybe he is the pilot of the airplane N824 that will bring our folks back. The other important images are the bottom 3. The last clearly resembles a DHARMA logo with some type of beacon on it. Hard to say what that means.

The two above it are more interesting. The woman is actress Zuleikha Robinson. The man is French actor Sai d'Taghmaoui. We have yet to see either of them in an episode of Lost... but we will... in the episode airing next Wednesday. The title of that episode is "316"... and it all comes full circle. Is your mind blown yet?

The lighthouse or beacon Dharma logo may also have been on the computer Eloise Hawking was using to calculate the location of the Island.

Hey Seth, comment on last night's episode: Do you think that when Charlotte told Jin not to bring her back, this place is death, etc etc ... was she remembering when Daniel told her mother that and just repeating it like she was repeating other random things from her childhood?? The easy thing for us to all think is that she means Sun and the baby, but I don't think it's that simple. Wanted to know your thoughts, thanks ...

Quite possible... the whole idea of Sun coming back is tricky anyway because while I think she would do anything to save Jin is she just going to leave her Daughter in Korea with her mother? Plus it looks like they may have to endure another plane crash to get back to the island (although we don't know that for sure). Is that something they can put kids like Aaron and Ji-Yeon through?

A theory that I have just considered is did Jack's Dad die on purpose to originally bring the people to the Island? It seems that there are going to be some paralels to how Locke and Jack's Dad are going to end up at the Island. Jack's Dad was in a casket when the Oceanic flight crashed and Locke will be in a casket with the Arija flight that will bring them back to the Island. Just wondering if down the road we could see a flashback to Jack's Dad being on the Island or meeting Ben and Ben telling Jack's Dad to make the same sacrifice (IE dying) to bring everyone to the Island.

Good theory... very well could be. Afterall it seems pretty obvious that he was able to do plenty with his life without his wife or son knowing (ie fathering Claire) so I would say this still falls in the realm of possibility.

Has anyone figured out that Ellie(the young 1950's British woman on the island in the Jughead episode) is a young Eloise Hawking? My theory is that she and Charles Widmore are the parets of Daniel Farraday, making him Penny's brother.

Yep, that is a pretty popular theory that has been floated around the site before. It seems quite likely considering that Widmore was also the one who was funding Faraday's research.
